Clinical Observation for the Patients with Burns


Abstract
The author studied the 100 burned patients who were admitted to the general surgery department of
Seoul National University Hospital since 1968(1968.1.1~19710.1.31), and summerized the results as follows; 1) The sex ratio of the burned patients, the male is 55% and the female is 45%.
In the age ratio, the infant and young children under 5 years of age are 47% which revealed the
most pick incidence, and from 16 to 20 years 20%, from 26 to 30 years 9%.
2) In the seasonal distribution of the burned patients, about 36% of burn occured in autumn, 25% in
winter, 22% in spring and 17% in summer.
3) At onset time, the burned patients who received the customary treatment which is the special tre¡þ
atment in Korea, was 5% of all the patients. The materials of the treatment were the oil, some kind
of salty food named Doinjang, clothes and the bony powder of the dog, etc.
4) In the causes of the burned patients, the most burn are due to boiling water which occupied 52%,
gasolin 23% was next.
5) In the occupational distribution of the burned patients, the infant was 55% the labor 10%, the student 8% and the industrial worker 7%.
6) In hospital courses, the burned patients were completely cured in 68%, the 17% were discharged
from the hospital with the incompletely convalescent state. The death rate was 15% of all patients 7) The causes of the death were the septicemia(60%), hypovolemic shock(33.3%) and embolism(6.6%). 8) The methods of treatment were the general and local treatment.
In local treatment, the 56% of all patients were received with the occlusive dressing method, and 29% with the exposure method, and the 14% with the combined.
The 42.82% of the exposure method was the only "dry up", the 28% with the normal saline soaking, and the hygiene, olive oil were used.
In the occlusive dressing method, 0.5% AgNO, was applied in 62.96% and vaseline ointment was applied in 12.97%.
